Voces y caras: Hispanic Communities in Jacksonville
The project Voces y caras: Hispanic Communities in Jacksonville has grown from a series of interviews performed by students in professor Constanza López’s course titled Communications and Communities for Speakers of Spanish. These interviews focus on the rapidly growing Hispanic community of Jacksonville, which – as this project makes evident – is very diverse.
Voces y Caras is also an multimedia exhibition that takes place during Hispanic Heritage month at the UNF Carpenter Library, and online. For more information, to listen to the interviews and view the exhibits over the years, visit the website.

Embroidering for Peace and Memory
Embroidering for Peace and Memory, which takes place in March to commemorate Women’s History Month, has become an important annual event at University of North Florida. Students and faculty gather together to embroider on pieces of white cloth, the stories of people around the world who have endured the violation of their rights. By embroidering their stories, we honor their memories and make others aware of their struggles in hopes that their stories are not repeated. So far, 150 pieces of embroidery have been created and collected, honoring people from Jacksonville and around the world in more than 13 languages. This event highlights the culture and diversity of our University and city. Visit our gallery to see the projects.
Previous experience with embroidery is not required. Everyone is welcome. Embroidery can be done in any language. Join us in the month of March. |
